Meet, Heidi, one of the newest residents of Grapevine, Texas and her incredibly sweet family. I connected last minute with Heidi’s parents… after she was already born, in fact. But I am so extremely thrilled that I got that chance to connect with this family, because their little bundle was nothing less than fiery magic wrapped up in the prettiest little package. She has spirit and “opinions” (maybe its those redheaded genes), but she is pure sweetness as well. And my goodness, when she sleeps with her mouth slightly open…heart melted. I couldn’t get enough of her. Her parents can’t get enough of her either!
So let me tell you, I was so encouraged in the time I spent with this Texas family. I realize I only get a small glimpse into each family’s dynamics in the brief moments I am with them, but the affection and honor this new mama and daddy had for one another was pretty powerful. Let’s be honest, that newborn stage and those first few days home are ROUGH (and that is an understatement). And these two new parents were handling all that stress pretty beautifully. She never once had to ask for something while I was there, as he was already there with it in hand. And he couldn’t have had more praise and encouragement from his bride. She told me several times how she would not be surviving without her husband and what a wonderful father he was to little Heidi. Honestly, it was inspiring. I mostly remember being tired, stressed, and often snippy with my husband during those first days (ok weeks…err…months) after having our babies, and sincerely I am not sure how much praise and encouragement I was bestowing on my husband.
Maybe, as human beings, we tend to zero in on the challenges of evolving marriage relationships after adding another human being to the picture. Perhaps, we spend too much time talking about the sleepless nights, messy houses, and date nights that rarely happen; when we should be highlighting the depth and the growth that are added to a relationship with each new season of life. I want to be more like these two new parents, spending more time in gratefulness for my husband, for his sacrifices and his character, so that I can serve him better and sing his praises. I love that God brought this little family my way to once again remind me that life is a precious gift that allows us to grow and to change with each new phase of life. Challenges may be a part of those phases, but they are also part of that growth and depth. All the more reason to love one another, to encourage one another. I am so grateful for that reminder from this little family.
